What’s it about?
Decades after our initial introduction to the zany demon, Beetlejuice re-emerges as Lydia and her estranged daughter, Astrid, returns to the now-famous Ghost House for a wedding and a funeral.
What did we think?
Anthony Sherratt says: For lovers of the original, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is crammed full of nostalgia, callbacks and sly references. It’s rollicking and fun with the occasional heart twang thrown in for good measure. The practical effects are wonderful and there’s not a bad performance among the entire star-studded cast. Jenna Ortega and Winona Ryder are wonderful, Michael Keaton is still Batman… I mean Beetlejuice but it’s Catherine O’Hara who almost steals the show with a character you want to hate. Well her and Bob.
It’s not perfect with a very soft ending and having adult Lydia as a pale imitation of her strong teen character, but there are enough laughs and nods to keep you and the kids engaged and entertained. This is Tim Burton being himself and that’s more than enough for most of us.
