What’s it about?
Accountant-to-the-baddies Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) is pulled into a mystery that sees him teaming up with a wary federal agent (Cynthia Addai-Robinson), and his estranged brother (Jon Bernthal).
What’d we think?
The Accountant 2 takes the best stuff from the first movie, discards the elements that you probably don’t remember, and then spins off on a new trajectory that’s far more entertaining. The plot is fairly irrelevant to one’s enjoyment of the movie, but it’s coherent enough – Cynthia Addai-Robinson’s has moved up in the the world of federal law enforcement since the first movie, but when she’s given a clue that leads her to our main man Christian, they realise there’s a larger puzzle for them to figure out along with the audience. Our leads need a little assistance in the form of Christian’s brother Braxton (Jon Bernthal) who would steal every scene he’s in if he wasn’t such a generous actor (I wish I had a less Theatre Kid way of phrasing that, believe me, I tried).
Leaning into the Rain Man dynamic that the brothers have provides fertile ground for a lot more comedy than I’d expected, and the laughs land as solidly as the punches. The chemistry between the two lead actors is fantastic, and while the action scenes and thriller elements are all executed well enough, the movie really shines when it’s just the boys being boys.
