COMPANION Movie Review

What does the data tell us?

What’s it about?

A weekend getaway turns bloody and violent when a subservient android that’s built for human companionship starts acting unexpectedly.

What did we think?

We’ve seen a lot of movies in the past year or so about Artificial Intelligence and androids (Subservience, M3gan etc) but most of them tread the same alarmist path. I’m delighted to say COMPANION is far superior. In fact, this is the best AI android film since Ex Machina which – in my opinion – is the best ever. But whereas Ex Machina was dark and gritty, Companion is a genuinely funny exploration of morality and technology.

Some intelligent movies fail because they go out of their way to show off they’re smart. Companions is intelligently written but never draws attention to itself, preferring to let the story speak for itself. It uses both subtlety and in-your-face moments while a subtext always lurks beneath the humour.

This movie shows off Jack Quaid’s (The Boys, Star Trek Lower Decks) entire acting range. Caring, compassionate, angry, manipulative… we see it all in one sitting. Sophie Thatcher is divine as the protagonist and deserves ever accolade she’ll receive for this.

It’s mischievous, smart and pure fun. It’s a great romp that I’m already eager to see again.

Just Yes!
COMPANION is an intelligent but mischievous romp through the worlds of murder and artificial intelligence. Layered but told simply and well, it’s going to be break-out hit and possibly a cult movie for years to come.
