What’s it about?
A biopic of Elvis Presley as told through the eyes of an ailing Col. Tom Parker on his dead bed.
What did we think?
Elizabeth Best says: Austin Butler IS Elvis Presley and you can’t convince me otherwise.
This movie is a colourful explosion of music and mayhem in true Baz Luhrmann style. Everyone knows the King of Rock and Roll, but Elvis sheds some light on the awful financial abuse he suffered through his career and is genuinely quite tragic.
A slightly cartoony performance from Tom Hanks (is this the first time he’s played a villain?) and an overlong runtime dampen the impact of the film. Ultimately, Elvis really sings when Austin is on stage, embodying the King and giving us one hell of a concert or five.
