What’s it about?

13-year-old Rockit loves surfing, hates school, and his best mate is his dad, Bosch. When the two embark on an impromptu road trip, Rockit is blissfully unaware that it’s due to the police being hot on their heels.

What did we think?

Peter Linning says: Bosch and Rockit is the kind of movie that I wish we saw more of in Australian cinema, hitting its coming-of-age story beats without ever becoming bleak, and delivering some authentically Australian humour that never feels self-conscious. It’s a light and easy watch, having a dreamy quality that puts you in the shoes of the young Rockit (pro surfer Rasmus King), and has some stunning visuals of the lead characters surfing (no stunt doubles here).

The standout of the movie is Luke Hemsworth’s performance as Bosch, a shit bloke that would like to have a heart of gold, but even he seems genuinely unsure of whether or not this is the case. Hemsworth balances sensitivity and swagger in a role that could have very easily fallen hard in either direction, and turns in one of the best performances I’ve seen all year.

It’s not perfect by any means – The pacing of the film is a little lopsided, and there’s a few clunky elements to the story, but overall it’s funny and bittersweet with some gorgeous visuals and great performances from the leads, and I can’t recommend it enough.
