Happy Death Day

Death by Deja vu?

What’s it about?

Sorority sister Tree (Jessica Rothe) is forced to relive a day over and over. It just so happens it’s both her birthday and the day she’s murdered.

What did we think?

Elizabeth Best says: If Groundhog Day and Scream had a little movie baby, Happy Death Day would be it. It doesn’t really matter that the film is full of plot holes (it’s 9:20 for, like, 15 minutes) and continuity errors (girl, you did not just fix your makeup in the time it took to walk through that door), because it’s pretty bloody fun (despite the fact there’s not actually that much blood at all). Teens will love it. Adults will have a chuckle, maybe a jump or two, and enjoy camp slasher movie with fun murder montages. What more could you want?

Dan Beeston says: A great horror film inspires you to care for the main character and then scared for their safety. This film, is not a great horror film. The conceit itself prevents that outcome. It is, however, a solid teen coming-of-age story. It just happens to have murder in it.

As with all time travel style stories it’s hard to keep the plot holes out and this film has them in spades. Made a drinking game of spotting them. I expect that’s how this concept came into being in the first place.

3 stars, unless you’re younger than 16 in which case I’m sure you’ll think this is a perfect film because your taste is terrible.
